Farewell

Today was my last day of teaching at Faith High School.  Almost at the end of the day, a voice from the loudspeaker calls out, “May I have your attention please.  You are all invited to an assembly in Room 100.”  Since it was my very last day, I have to admit I was a little suspicious.  So we all stopped what we were doing (I was talking about hospitality to my Home Ec 1 students), and went up to Room 100.

There the students had a very nice little farewell party for me.  Dwyle, Juanita, Eileen, and Rita got up and said some complimentary things about me :-).  Thank you!  You made my day!  Delvin was moderating and asked if anybody else had anything else to say.  I couldn’t help it, I had to get up and give a little speech.

I don’t think it came out right, but I said something about the journey that we are all on and how I have been privileged to be on this journey with them for this short little time.  And I said something about hoping to see them all in heaven.  I told them that thinking about leaving has been harder than I thought it would be, even though I feel at peace about my decision.  My voice was quavering of course, partly from nervousness and partly because I was feeling sad about leaving.  The students are very special to me.  They have enriched my life.

Then they gave me a big bouquet made of fruit and a gift certificate for Barnes and Nobles.  I felt very honored.

After school all the teachers went out to eat at Dienner’s as a going away party.  Is it any wonder that I’m feeling overwhelmed tonight?
